BLURB:
She’s looking for the perfect man. He’s looking for the perfect victim.
Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can’t shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.
Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He’s charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.
Then the brutal murder of a young woman―the latest in a string of deaths across the coast―confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.
Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can’t shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn’t get to the truth, she’ll be the killer’s next victim…
A dark story about obsession and the things we’ll do for love, #1 New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden proves that crimes of passion are often the bloodiest…
MY THOUGHTS:
Sighs heavily*
I have to give a shoutout to my local library for having the audiobook on Hoopla because the narrators did an amazing job bringing the story to life. Victoria Connolly’s voice was a perfect match for Sydney, and she really captured the character’s vibe. The narration definitely made the experience enjoyable.
However, I have to be honest—the main character, Sydney, drove me up the wall. I found myself getting more and more frustrated with her, especially when it came to her constant back-and-forth about wanting a relationship, but then making questionable decisions that had me thinking, “Why are you doing this?” It honestly felt like watching a Lifetime movie where you’re yelling at the screen because the main character just won’t stop making bad choices. I can’t be the only one who feels like that!
As for the plot, I thought the ending twist was a bit of a letdown. It didn’t really make sense to me, and honestly, I was expecting something more. I almost thought Slug would be the serial killer, but then when the twist was revealed, I felt… kinda disappointed. It didn’t really fit with everything that had been building up in the story, and it threw me off a bit.
Overall, while I did enjoy listening to the book and thought the narration was excellent, the annoying main character and the disappointing twist pulled it down for me. I’m giving it 3 stars—I enjoyed the experience, but it definitely had its flaws. Would I recommend it? If you’re a fan of suspenseful thrillers and can tolerate a frustrating protagonist, sure, but just know the ending might not leave you satisfied.
