BLURB:
There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men’s maximum-security prison:
1) Treat all prisoners with respect.
2) Never reveal any personal information.
3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates.
But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary’s most notorious and dangerous inmates.
And they certainly don’t know that Shane was Brooke’s high school sweetheart—the star quarterback who is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders. Or that Brooke’s testimony was what put him there.
But Shane knows.
And he will never forget.
MY THOUGHTS:
I’ve been stuck in a serious reading slump lately, but wow, The Inmate by Freida McFadden pulled me right out of it! This book had me hooked from the first page, and I found myself carrying it everywhere, just waiting for a moment to dive back in. The suspense? Off the charts! I was literally on the edge of my seat, desperate to find out who was behind all the chaos—Tim or Shane? The tension surrounding Brooke’s life kept me guessing, and I couldn’t put it down.
What I really appreciated were the flashbacks to the Farmhouse, giving a haunting glimpse into how everything unfolded while still keeping the present narrative gripping. The way McFadden wove the story together was masterful. I was playing detective myself, trying to piece together the clues—at one point, I even suspected Officer Hunt! The twists had me pacing the floor, completely engrossed.
I will say, Brooke could be a bit frustrating. There were moments where I couldn’t believe she was giving Tim and Shane the benefit of the doubt, especially when she mistook a body in the basement for a mannequin. I mean, come on, girl!
But honestly, I devoured this book. By the time I reached the last page, I was so wrapped up in it that when my phone started ringing from the other room, I nearly jumped out of my skin! No one ever calls, so it felt a bit eerie, fitting the vibe of the book perfectly.
I checked this out from my local library, but now I’m seriously considering buying my own copy. The ending was just perfect—Freida McFadden knocked it out of the park! If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. You won’t regret it!
