Why Getting a Library Card Is the Glow-Up You Didn’t Know You Needed

With the looming TikTok ban, I’ve noticed people out here getting their first library cards, and I LOVE to see it. Welcome to the club! You’ve just unlocked access to a treasure trove of resources—books (both physical and digital), fun activities, and ways to learn cool new skills. And if you have kids, the library has so much to keep them entertained too. Seriously, it’s like the ultimate membership.

Did you know some libraries even offer free tickets to local events and museums? That’s right—you’re not just signing up for books; you’re signing up for an entire experience. Plus, your wallet is going to thank you for the cost savings. Free books, free activities, free learning? Yes, please!

If you just got a library card and you’re into digital books, you’ll want to check out apps like Libby and Hoopla. I personally use Hoopla to listen to audiobooks, though there’s a limit of five checkouts at a time. But hey, it’s free, so I’m not complaining! And if you’re like me, someone who doesn’t mind eBooks but occasionally craves the feeling of a physical book in their hands, the library is perfect. My local library even allows unlimited checkouts and has waived late fines. (Yes, you read that right. They’re basically telling me, “Take your time.”)

Also, confession time: I absolutely decorated my library card with stickers. It’s a vibe. Highly recommend.

The library has always been a safe haven for me. Since childhood, it’s been my go-to spot. But, with the rise of social media and services like Kindle Unlimited, I got swept up in the hype and forgot just how resourceful the library truly is. Slowing down and getting back to the root of it all feels so good.

Now, I also bring my daughter to the library when we need to get out of the house. She loves playing with the toys in the children’s section and flipping through picture books. They even have story times and activities for parents to enjoy with their kids. It’s such a wholesome way to spend time together.

But let me tell you, the library isn’t just for kids. They’ve got something for everyone. Adults can enjoy book clubs, writer’s groups, sewing clubs, and so much more. They even offer resources for job seekers. Whether you’re looking for career advice, a quiet place to work, or just a new hobby, the library’s got your back.

And if you’re tired of working or reading at your local coffee shop, consider bringing your favorite coffee or tea to the library instead. It’s just as cozy and a whole lot quieter. Plus, it’s free. (Are you seeing a theme here?)

Maybe this whole TikTok ban is a blessing in disguise. It’s encouraged me to slow down and rediscover the magic of the library. Don’t get me wrong—I’ve discovered so many amazing authors through TikTok, but it also had me chasing my next high instead of savoring the books I was reading. The library has been a breath of fresh air, helping me pause, reset, and really enjoy the moment.

So, if you haven’t already, go get yourself a library card. Fall in love with your local library. It’s a safe space that reminds us to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

Happy reading!
