The Plot
We meet Whitney, a megastar, powerful, independent, and successful in her own right. Years ago, she froze her eggs, just in case. Fast forward to now, and she gets the shock of a lifetime: due to a fertility clinic mix-up, someone used her eggs in a surrogacy procedure… and there’s a whole baby in the world that’s biologically hers.
Enter Myles, a high-powered lawyer and the biological father of said baby, who believed he and his (now ex) wife were the rightful parents. The baby, Haylee, was carried via surrogate, and Myles is raising her when Whitney learns the truth.
Naturally, you’d think Whitney steps in and motherhood begins. But oh no. Myles is NOT having it.
My Thoughts 💭
I loved the concept. It was fresh, unexpected, and the emotional stakes were so high. The found family energy? Beautiful. The single dad trope? I ate that right up. And I loved that both main characters were successful in their own careers—it added a nice layer of balance and independence to the story.
But now… let’s talk about Myles.
Lawd, Myles.
He was the definition of grumpy MMC and not in the cute, “aww-he-hates-everyone-but-her” way. Nah, this man was strict, borderline cold, and made it really difficult to root for him during the early stages of his relationship with Whitney. Even as things warmed up romantically, I found it hard to connect with him emotionally, which made the romance a bit of a slow climb for me.
Also, some chapters dragged a bit. I love when an author lets us sit in a moment, but there’s a fine line between depth and dragging. A few scenes had me skimming to get back to the juicy bits.
BUT , credit where credit is due, the epilogue was beautiful. That’s where the emotional payoff hit, and you finally felt the love and growth between the characters in a way that felt earned.
Final Verdict
This was a refreshing, drama-filled, emotional rollercoaster that pulled me out of my romance rut. It’s definitely one of those reads you pick up when you want something different—something that isn’t all sunshine and fluff, but still delivers heart.
Is it perfect? No.
Did Myles make me want to throw the book? Yes
But did I enjoy it and would I recommend it?
Absolutely.
If you’re in the mood for something bold, a little messy, and a whole lot entertaining, this might be your next weekend read.
3.5 stars from me!
