BLURB:
What if marriage was the law? Dare you disobey? Black Mirror meets thriller with a dash of Naomi Alderman’s The Power in this dark, high-concept novel by the bestselling author of The One.
Britain. The near-future. A right-wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills—the Sanctity of Marriage Act, which actively encourages marriage as the norm, punishing those who choose to remain single.
But four couples are about to discover just how impossible relationships can be when the government is monitoring every aspect of our personal lives—monitoring every word, every minor disagreement…and will use every tool in its arsenal to ensure everyone will love, honor and obey.
My Thoughts:
This book seriously messed with my sleep! Don’t even think about reading it before bed unless you’re really into having disturbing dreams. I mean, each chapter was so mind-blowing that I’d just stare at the page like “Wait, what did I just read?!” John Marrs totally nailed it with this dystopian world. It’s like having an Amazon Alexa in your home, listening to everything and getting all up in your business. I’m side-eyeing so hard right now, thinking about our Amazon Alexa “Ziggy” being a potential Big Brother. What if, right? What if this book is actually a warning from the future?! I’ve got shivers just thinking about it.
Honestly, “The Marriage Act” sometimes felt like it had more characters than a Game of Thrones season! I mean, I love a good story, but keeping track of all those relationships was like juggling flaming torches – entertaining, but a little dangerous. Maybe if we focused on just one relationship, it would’ve been like watching a rom-com instead of a whole soap opera! At times, I felt like I needed a GPS just to navigate the plot, and by the end of a chapter, my eyes were wider than a startled owl’s.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend adding this book to your tbr list! It’s worth the read!
Happy Reading Folks!
