MY THOUGHTS ON THE 48 LAWS OF POWER By Robert Greene:
The 48 Laws of Power is an interesting read, to say the least. To me, it almost feels like Robert Greene is pulling back the curtain on the world of politics and business, exposing the tactics people use to get ahead. While some may see this book as a serious guide to power, I read it as more of a critique—a satirical take on the lengths people go to in pursuit of influence. Looking at the world today, it’s hard not to see parallels, which makes the book both eye-opening and a little unsettling.
That said, one law really stood out to me—Law 10: “Infection: Avoid the Unhappy and The Unlucky.” There’s real wisdom in this. Misery does love company, and the energy of those around us can deeply affect our own mindset and progress. Surrounding yourself with uplifting, motivated people can make all the difference.
The book expands on this idea: “Understand this: In the game of power, the people you associate with are critical. The risk of associating with infectors is that you will waste valuable time and energy trying to free yourself. Through a kind of guilt by association, you will suffer in the eyes of others. Never underestimate the dangers of infections.”
While the book’s approach may be intense, there’s something to be said for being mindful of the company we keep.
I think the best way to read this book is with an open yet critical mind. It offers an intriguing perspective on power dynamics, but it’s also a reminder that not all success is built on integrity. Some may take it as a step-by-step guide, but I see it more as a thought-provoking commentary on the world we live in. At the end of the day, we each have the power to choose how we navigate life—with kindness, with wisdom, and with authenticity.
For those reading—take what resonates and leave the rest. or Read it, reflect on it, and decide for yourself. Are these laws the key to power, or a warning against its dangers?
Happy reading!
Try as I might, I have not been able to prove the laws invalid. We should teach this book in high school. 😒 Good review.
