If you’re putting together your Summerween reading list, definitely throw Brokeula into the mix.
This horror novella asks one very important question: What if Dracula was… broke?
Who would’ve thought vampires could be struggling financially? I mean… we definitely didn’t see Twilight preparing us for that. Edward Cullen had the fancy cars, the gorgeous house, and unlimited resources. Meanwhile, Brokeula is just trying to stay afloat.
Instead of haunting castles and living his best immortal life, our financially struggling vampire decides the solution to all of his problems is to start a business… by turning humans into vampires for profit. Things really get interesting when he interviews Lauren, and from there the story takes off in the weirdest, funniest way.
One thing I wasn’t expecting to love as much as I did was the artwork scattered throughout the book. It gave the novella so much personality and made the reading experience even more fun. I also found myself looking forward to seeing Brokeula’s running bank balance. Every time his negative balance popped up, it somehow managed to be even worse than before, and it became one of my favorite recurring jokes throughout the story.
I had such a good time with this one. It’s funny, it’s short, we get all the vampire vibes, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It also made me realize just how many people would actually be willing to become vampires if given the chance.
Would I become a vampire?
…Honestly? Hmmm… maybe.
3 Star Rating: A witty, quirky horror novella that’s perfect for anyone looking to squeeze one more vampire story into their Summerween TBR.
